Rowing, treadmill, ellipticals, stairmaster, multigym, power rack, weight benches – most popular home gym machines which I’ve found over the net, their prices and basic information about manufacturers or sellers.

_

Reading the description of this piece of art, I liked two things: they say the exercise machine is silent, so it won’t disturb you listening to Scarlatti when you exercise, and there is a remote control as well so you don’t have to stop your silent journey on the Thames or wherever you row. Yeah, you row at home, but for sure you have a big photo with a lot of trees and some water on your wall so let’s say it’s the Thames. This rowing machine is made in Germany so don’t be surprised that there is a lifetime warranty for the frame. There’s a lot of technical information with countless digits which I don’t even want to understand, but there is one more important thing: this exercise machine looks nice. It looks even better than some paintings of old Neue Wilde. They hated nice things for some reason. Germans are so interestingly versatile. So this Kettler X-Row E3 Rowing Machine will look pleasant in your home gym studio in the front of exercise wall mirror, and you can just show the machine to the girls, you don’t even have to actually exercise, and you’re done, at least for the first night. The price is high, but I don’t think you invite the cheapest ladies to your intimate studio.

Treadmill

Diving Treadmill

The chosen model name: CYBEX 750T, made by Cybex. The “T” is probably for treadmill, 750 God knows for what. The price remains a mystery, I’ve read about 5 pages over the net about this exercise machine on the Cybex site and there is no info about the price so I assume it’s hell expensive, exactly what I was looking for. There’s more space to run than on other treadmills and the machine itself can withstand the weight of a 182 kg runner, about three times my weight, so I ask myself if three authors of this post can run on the same machine on the same time. No answer in FAQ’s. To be honest there was one thing I didn’t like about this treadmill, namely: they say that using of products of competitors can lead to injury. Ok, I leave it without comments. You can think what you want, they are your thoughts, not mine, I don’t care. As to the color I would choose the black frame. Now, the most important question: do you really need a treadmill in your home gym studio? Well, it probably depends where you live. If you’re a huge property owner with land in Yorkshire than probably is better to run outside, but maybe if you work as a broker in Helsinki, for sure it’s better to find a gym studio in your area. For everyone else, I recommend buying a treadmill and putting it in your own home gym. You won’t waste time in the underground to get to a fitness club and you don’t have to buy trousers for running in winter. Of course you lose the possibility of looking at women running on treadmills at the club, however you can always invite the lady you saw yesterday at the gas station to run with you at your place.

Ellipticals

I remember when I started to take care of my body and began reading about home gym machines I didn’t even know what exactly ellipticals machines meant. Something to do with stars? Ok, I attach a nice video from YouTube on my blog so if a reader from Brazzaville doesn’t know he can simply watch the video. The name of the model: Captiva Elliptical Machine; manufacturer: Yowza. (Nice company name, by the way.) Price: $2,000. Ok, they say $1,999 because they have an intelligent marketing director who has an MBA, so they put 1,999 instead of 2,000 because they know that human beings are irrational particularly when it comes to spending money, love, sexual attraction and so on. Ok, 1,999, not 2,000, American law system is so sophisticated that for sure there is a paragraph about death penalty if I don’t give you correct information. I’m a bit afraid of going to America because I feel that when I touch the ground there I will feel guilty from the first moment. Ok, I’ve been to Miami some time ago, nice Latin women on the Ocean Drive, however I don’t remember the several hours with an officer in the airport as something pleasant. I would say he was the biggest son of a bitch of all officers I’ve ever met in the airports. And it was long before 9/11. I write about it because this is elliptical – I come back on my ellipse to the subject. Captiva is one of the nicest home gym machines I’ve seen. It is not so cute that one can understand why some copywriters write “customers love this machine”, it seems to me it’s a serious deviation to write shit like this, but it’s true that the machine is really cute. Believe me, or just look at the photos attached. I really enjoyed reading that Captiva motion targets the muscles of rectus abdominus and serratus anterior. Latin language is so captivating! Imagine a fitness studio full of beautiful sisters of mercy in miniskirt on elliptical machines in a basilica in Rome all of them singing “Holly rectus, holly erectus, holly serratus, holly, holly”. I wanted to read something from the customers reviews on the manufacturer website but when in the first post a Melissa has written: “I was in love from the first time” I’ve understood that the Yowza’s copywriter uses a name of his girlfriend in the posts. So listen to me carefully, Yowza: you have very pretty products, you just need some more courage in advertising, and you can always contact me by mail or you can buy this idea of the church in Rome rectus serratus. Copyrights reserved from now to eternity, we are in a catholic church, after all.

If you prefer stretching search for pilates machines on this site.

I exercise regularly, once every two or three days. I always do the same series of asanas; I don’t change it for months. I focus on three aspects: developing postures which are difficult for me, continuing basic asanas and respiration. I don’t use any pilates machines nor home gym machines neither.

Every session is divided into six parts: inverted postures, sun salutations, standing postures, laying postures, forward bends and finally closing salamba sarvangasana postures.

_

_

Inverted postures

uttanasana, 24 (number of respirations in every asana)
salamba sirsasana, 100 or 40 respirations and then variants:

parsva sirsasana, 6

ekapada sirsasana, 6

parsvaikapada sirsasana, 6

parivrittaikapada sirsasana, 6 (+ 2 variants without Hindi name)

vriscikasana, 12 if possible
adho mukha vrksana, 12 (against the wall)
adho mukha vrksana, 12 if possible (without the wall)
pinca mayurasana, 12 (without a wall)

I always begin from salamba sirsasana in front of the exercise wall mirror because at the beginning of the session the body is fresh, so it is easier to maintain equilibrium. After one or two hours of exercising the body is trembling too much, muscles are tired. Salamba sirsasana and adho mukha vrksana are asanas which I always do. My hands are weak so it helps me to strengthen them; salamba sirsasana is one of the most important asanas, and my favorite. You mustn’t pass it up during yoga sessions. This is one of the reasons I don’t appreciate a lot of the first ashtanga series, or the Sivananda style. These styles don’t attribute importance to inverted postures which is an error in my opinion. Maintaining balance and quiet respiration in salamba sirsasana is one of the most important aspects of yoga.

Sun Salutations

6 simple series:

tadasana
uttanasana
caturanga dandasana
urdhva mukha svanasana
adho mukha svanasana, 6
tadasana

6 compound series:
As above, adding virabhadrasana II, the first begins form the right leg, the second from the left leg.

This is the most stimulating series so keeping quiet respiration is a key to not becoming tired too quickly. Maintain slow, deep respiration, slow down asanas if necessary; don’t let the heart beat too fast.

Standing Postures

This is the longest series. I perform all basic postures, every posture on the right, on the left and 12 respirations each. One respiration between asanas. Don’t stop, continue until the end.

trikonasana
parivritta trikonasana
parsvakonasana
parivritta parsvakonasana
ardha candrasana
virabhadrasana I
virabhadrasana III
parsvottanasana
prasarita padottanasana (2 variants)

Standing postures are designed mainly for beginners. However, I always do them because these postures are the basis for all the others. Strong legs are a must in yoga. I like getting back to the basics. Most of those asanas are easy, aside from virabhadrasana III which requires a little bit stronger legs than other postures in this series. Warrior III is done at the middle of the whole session.

Laying Postures

urdhva dhanurasana, 24
urdhva prasarita padasana, 12
supta padangusthasana, 12 (2 variants)
abdomen exercises, 12 (2 variants)

I begin with urdhva dhanurasana. It is not a lying position, it’s a backward bend. However I perform it at this time of the session because after finishing I can smoothly pass to urdhva prasarita padasana. In theory I should do more backward bends. However I’m quite flexible in this kind of asanas so I don’t work a lot on it. Leg stretching in a laying position is a very easy posture. I include it in my series because it gives a little rest after urdhva prasarita padasana. Exercises for the abdomen, which I perform next, are not original yoga exercises. However, to maintain my abdomen in shape I’ve added these two exercises at the end of this series. Some people believe that urdhva prasarita padasana are an exercise for the abdomen but this is not true. During urdhva prasarita padasana it is a lower part of the back which is involved much more than the abdomen.

Forward bends

pascimottanasana, 12
janusirsasana, 12
exercises for head and eyes, 12
maricyasana I, 12
baddha konasana, 12
maricyasana III, 12
pascimottanasana, 24

Forward bends are the softest ones of all the series. I repeat pascimottanasana twice because it’s an important asana for me. I’m not a very flexible person so I focus on my weakness. Exercises for the head and the eyes are not yoga asanas. I add them because I spend a lot of time in front of a computer screen in the same position. My neck, back and eyes suffer more than other parts of my body.

Salamba Sarvangasana Series

salamba sarvangasana, 40
parivritta sarvangasana, 6
ekapada sarvangasana, 6
parsvaika pada sarvangasana, 6
sarvangasana, 6 (+2 other variants without name)
halasana, 24
karnapidasana, 24

Salamba sarvangasana series is a closing one. It is one of the most important asanas, more difficult than salamba sirsasana. I pay a lot of attention to this series. The last position in a yoga sessions is usually savasana, dead posture. However I finish the session with karnapidasana. I rest in this asana as well as in savasana. Savasana tranquilize me too much and sometimes make me sleepy. I don’t need this effect; I want to stay somewhat stimulated after finishing the session.

My series are based mainly on the Iyengar method. I’ve mixed up some asanas from ashtanga or Sivananda style; however it is Iyengar who remains my master. I’ve been practicing yoga for 10 years. I believe I’ll never stop. I can imagine a life without yoga, but I wouldn’t like to return to the state of mind and body when I was unable to feel my respiration, to control my balance, to feel my muscles and tendons.

Yoga is one of the Indian gifts which we will continue to use and develop for the next thousand years. Yoga is not a sport or a religion. It is a way of experiencing one’s own body and mind. Yoga is simple. You don’t have to pay anything to anyone. You only need a small, flat place and a mat and you can begin. Feel your breath first. With every breath you are closer to death. Each one is precious.

If you prefer other kind of fitness read the post about discount home gyms.

In this post I describe some BSN products like: Syntha 6, No explode, Nitrix and Cell mass (Cellmass). First, let’s look at the BSN itself. Bio-Engineered Supplements & Nutrition. This Florida based fitness supplements company has probably one of the most easily recognizable brands on the market worldwide. In 2009, the company won 8 product categories in a competition organized by BodyBuilding dot com. More than any other company in history. So this post is definitely not about discount supplements.

No eXplode

No explode is number 1 selling BSN supplement used as a pre training igniter. The manufacturer says: “Once you train with it, you’ll never train without it!” Do they mean that the addiction factor of this powder is stronger than the power of heroin or snow? No answer in FAQ’s. I’ll never understand why addiction to alcohol or fitness is good and the addiction to marijuana or opium is bad. That’s probably because some people can’t live without the idea of good and evil. “I’m good, you’re bad.” I take No explode and can’t live without it, you smoke marijuana so we will can put you in jail. Idiots never die. Why? Because every one of us has an idiot inside. So let’s explode. If you need elevated energy (I need it), motivation (I need it), mental focus (as well), power – take explode and explode. No Explode promotes strength and endurance, helps in recovery and muscle mass. Prolongs time to exhaustion. The question remains: what’s the price? I’m not talking about $$, what’s the price in life? The old catholic evil was honest: I give you wealth, happiness, all sort of pleasure but there’s a price – some blood from your finger. Sign the paper. I’ll buy this No explode. I’ll sign the paper. On training days it’s recommended to take it on an empty stomach 2 hours after a meal or 1 hour after a protein shake. The price of No explode varies between $5 to $67. A lot of fruit flavors: lemon, raspberry, grape, orange. And the most important thing: the correct name of the product is not “no explode”. This is No-Xplode. Remember this for next time you enter the words into your search engine.

Nitrix

Nitrix

Let’s continue our journey in this supplement store. Nitrix is a vasco-muscular volumizer in tablets. As other BSN supplements mentioned above, it also promotes strength, endurance, muscle mass and work capacity. If you were looking for something for stretching instead look at the post on pilates machines instead. Nitrix is also designed for people looking to support lean muscle and recovery. It’s recommended to use 3 tablets 3 times a day on an empty stomach. Once again the same question: what are the side effects of using Nitrix? I haven’t found any opinions, any posts against Nitrix. There are only two possible reasons for that: either this is really a very good and safe means for everyone to add muscle mass, or any online opinions against using this product disappear seconds after being posted. I’ll buy this product soon, then I’ll tell you what I think personally. Prices per container range from $60 to $100. No flavors. They’re tablets!

Cell mass

Cell mass

The last product from our supplement store is Cellmass (sometimes written erroneously as cell mass). This is a post training mass and recovery activator in form of powder. To maximize its effects it’s recommended to drink a lot of water and eat a lot of carbohydrates and proteins. The first effects will appear in 3 to 7 days. Each week the effects become more pronounced. Prices vary between $10 and $75. The supplement store on BSN online also sells a new product Cellmass NT (a little bit late, why not Cellmass Vista or Cell mass 7?) 4 packs of the trial for only $10. Too cheap for me. After a short research on “cellmass opinions” I see the same thing again: everybody’s happy. “Amazing”, “I love it”, “Great product”, “It works”. Like the Chinese communist party. We all love the king. Ok, I give up doubting. It seems that the product is one of the best or simply the best on the market. Or they have the best marketing strategy. There’s only a small group of disappointed people who say: “Cell mass? Too expensive.” That’s no problem. I like to spend money on expensive products. Yesterday I’ve bought the most expensive adjustable dumbbells. In summary: supplement store and producer BSN supplements is one of the biggest on the market. Some products, like Syntha 6, Nitrox, No-Xplode (and not “no explode”), and Cellmass (and not: “Cell mass”) seems to be worth spending money on. Opinions on forums are almost unanimous. Some other supplement stores sell these products for lower prices than the manufacturer. Hard to explain. Do you understand economics? I don’t. And I don’t want to understand it. A toy for eggheads. To buy BSN supplements cheaper go to E Vitamins. This is all for today. I’m off to show my home gym machines to the girl from the picture above.

BSN True Mass

Multigym part II

For those of you, who don’t have enough money to buy brand-new machines there’s always a possibility to look for discount home gyms. This option is worth considering if you accept buying used machines.

_

Pay attention to manufacturers or resellers selling new equipment as a “discount gyms”. In most of the cases this is nothing more than a marketing gimmick. A longer post about discount equipment will arise soon, for a moment I just give you some advice where to look for it. The easiest option is to go to amazon com or ebay. However I would recommend you to try craiglist or gumtree first. Easier to find someone near you, and go to see the machine you are looking for, instead of just clicking “order now”, free shipping etc. You never know what you get.

Stairmaster

Stairmaster… price and manufacturer and the name of the product… well… I can’t. It seems simply too grotesque for me. Maybe because I’ve always lived in houses with a lot of stairs so I walked up and down many times a day and looking at ladies walking on the stairmaster machine seems too absurd to me.Ok, almost everything is absurd if you look from the right angle, however some things and behaviors tend to be more absurd than other.

So I’m very sorry, I can’t write about stairmaster, not today, I’ll ask my wife to write about it later, she’s a more serious person and more comprehensible, her text will be better. Instead I’ll write about the Wireless Heart Rate Strap which I’ve found on the Smooth Fitness website. Why? Because this is one of those companies with a good website and first-class fitness equipment like others mentioned in this post. They sell mainly treadmills and elliptical machines but have also some accessories. The most expensive is Wireless Heart Rate Strap: $50. Oh, I’m very sorry, 49,99 of course. What does it do? Well, simply give you information how close you are to a heart attack if you run or ellipse too far, too fast, too strong. A very, very long time ago people simply felt if they were ok or not, however today we don’t feel anything anymore, we need digital information and numbers to know if our heart still beats or would prefer to sleep.

Multigym

Name of the product: Total Gym XLS, manufacturer: Total Gym, price: $974. It could be more expensive comparing to treadmills or rowing machines but we have to accept this price as it is. I was a little bit suspicious at the beginning but it seems that there are really many exercises you can perform on this total multigym system. More than 80, they say. Even if they exaggerate a little bit, 30 exercises is still a high number.

Total Gym

The sample workout is: squat, single leg squat, pull up, leg curl, cross cable row, seated biceps curl, outer hip and thigh, oblique twister, seated chest press, front pullover, pullover with crunch, lying triceps extension, shoulder press, core extension, toe touch stretch. Well, not bad for $974. A huge advantage is that this whole machine is easily folded, 1 minute and 3 seconds on the video, and you are done. And without problems you can hide this type of home gyms under your bed. The machine itself is promoted by Chuck Norris and Christine Brinkley however I don’t remember any movies with either of them so I have no opinion on this matter. I prefer expensive equipment but in this case they offer free shipping and free back money guarantee trial for 30 days which is worth checking into. I’m afraid only in Colorado, Lahore is a little bit too far perhaps, once I find a Pakistan reseller I’ll let you know. Well, maybe I made a mistake. I’ve choose the most expensive one from home gym machines but now I see they have also professional Total Gym /serial numbers/ which are expensive as expected, it means $2,895 and you can perform over 200 exercises using it. Well, it’s too late, I’ve written already about the other one so if you have any questions concerning the better second one ask Chuck Norris.

Power rack

Power rack itself it’s one of the things archeologists in 50,000 years will ask themselves “What did they use it for?” So, if you don’t know what it is, there’s a picture attached. Name of the product: York STS Power Rack, manufacturer: York, price: $1,119. This power rack comes with combo grip pull-up bar, one pair of double bar holders, 12 pegs of weight storage, stainless steel hook-plates, 2 holders of bar storage and 1 pair of interior safety spot bars. Length 185 cm, width 170 cm, height 244 cm, and weight 131 kg. Nothing more particularly interesting about this power rack however I like the York company, their website and other products, so I mention one of their home gym machines.

Weight benches

Fitness Bench

The last product is a weight bench from KAR-MET called BEN100. There is only one reason I include this machine in this post: look at the design. Great! And they have a lot more, really sexy fitness designs of home gyms. It gives me strong motivation to exercise every day when I think I can touch this bench and by touching it become so attractive and stay in a good shape. There is however a big mystery about this company. For some reason they don’t have any information in English, maybe they export only to Estonia, God knows why, they don’t give literally any info about prices, the same God remains silent, and they don’t give any opportunity to buy it online. So, dear KAR-MET, what’s the problem? Webmaster? Translator? Marketing? Just email me. If you know how to use email, of course.

And for dessert: if you are not so rich as I am, who craps with money and therefore buys the most expensive and sophisticated home gym machines for my own home studio, you can always do what my colleague did. A real man, not a media made pumped up doll. Look at his home gyms. Apparently he doesn’t use a lot of pilates machines. I would add a exercise wall mirror at the left. Maybe.

Home Gym Machines

Pilates machines, pilates dvd, pilates ring, aero pilates - basic info and short story about pilates itself. Which pilates machine do you prefer: cadillac, reformer, performer, or just stretch yourself against the wall?

Pilates Machine

Pilates machine? What is pilates? It is a system of about 30 exercises invented about 100 years ago by a German whose name was Pilates. If we examine it a little bit deeper we see that it’s a European version of “soft” yoga.

_

The system focuses on postures, breathing and stretching rather than strength. The differences are secondary. I’ll write about the pilates system of exercises, but don’t forget – the next step is yoga, not a fitness gym studio. There are a lot of accessories for this type of exercise, more than for yoga, and there are some pilates machines as well. The original system, as original yoga, didn’t make use of any of these accessories. It was about the body, about pure body, pure breath and pure mind. We have invented mats for yoga, sport shoes, dumbbells and much more – all these things are very useful for beginners, particularly for the people like you, who spend too much time in front of a monitor instead of simply standing up and starting to exercise next to your chair. In a fact you don’t need anything else, besides exercise wall mirror perhaps. But we have to do something with the money we earn sitting. So let’s look at some pilates machines.

Pilates Cadillac

Pilates Machine I

_

_

The most popular models are: reformer, pedipull, resistance bands, cadillac, barrel and chair. Here is a photo of a cadillac. As you may see in the picture, it’s a mix of a bed, a cage and a lady learning to fly. This pilates machine is a contemporary sign of a the never ending dream of Icarus. Xtend Pilates comes in 8 colors for $2,400 which seems reasonable for a piece of wood and some iron. A lot of stuff for yoga and some pilates accessories are available on Yoga Accessories website. For some reason this form of exercise appears to be a kind of gymnastics performed in studios rather than at home. There are a lot of fitness addicts who do yoga or use fitness equipment at home, but pilates is also a way to spend time together, with other women. Hard to find a man in a pilates studio. Well, of course many of the trainers are men, but that’s another story. A pilates studio can be filled with machines or totally empty. Compare these two pics and you’ll see.

Pilates Reformer

The second pilates machine worth mentioning is the pilates reformer. As you probably can tell I’m not a great fan of it. However curiosity always pushes us forward and it doesn’t matter what’s the subject of our research in life we always find something astonishing. So there are some amazing machines on the pilatesdotcom website, pilates reformer as well. It looks like a piece of craftsmanship, not cheap Chinese plastic shit.

Stretches

They have a nice site too, with the most expensive and sophisticated reformers being close to $5.000. There’s no joke about it, spending $5,000 is already a real big pleasure.

Stretches

Before you start your gym session it’s always good to perform some stretches. However, when it comes to yoga or pilates, this is not exactly true – pilates is a kind of stretching itself. Stretches are such an important part of the session that pilates without stretches doesn’t exist. Here are two examples. If you can’t perform the first one you can always start with the second. Everything depends on free will, breathing and concentration. Nothing to do with your age or physical capabilities. Everyone can climb to Mount Everest. Everyone can be a smiling, stretched, 21 year old beauty. Ne c’est pas? And now something completely different: stretches. There’s one company I recommend. The name of the company is iTrain. You can download from their site classes of pilates stretching in mp3. Great idea, amazing site. Stretch with iStretch.

_

Winsor Pilates

If you’re looking for something more refined than mp3 you can always visit the site of Mari Winsor pilates. One can read on her website that Hollywood stars love her. No info from where those stars come from, ATL or XXX. After all we all need to stretch from time to time. So, on her website you’ll find plenty of educational material to order. Order now. The highest price I’ve seen was $220, hopelessly nothing more expensive, but I can resist.

Pilates DVD

Once you’ve chosen a home pilates machine (by the way, which one is better in your opinion, cadillac or pilates reformer?) or when you’ve chosen a pilates studio, and bought an mp3 or total kit from Mari Winsor pilates, you can also order a pilates DVD from basipilates dot com, or stotpilates. You choose. I recommend basi.

Pilates ring and aero pilates

The longer version of the post about pilates ring and aero pilates is coming, here only the brief explanation. The pilates ring is simply a ring used in some exercises. Some examples of exercises you can see at Martha Stewart dot com, session with Mary Tedesco. The first one exercise I’ve seen on the video is quite stupid. Laying on the mat on the back you put a ring between your knees and simply exercise trying to approach fast your legs and then releasing the tension. It looks like a football player during the break or like a woman during her plateau. It really doesn’t look serious, a little bit silly. Maybe this is an exercise for elder people, I don’t recommend to anybody to buy it. Aero pilates looks much better. This is a machine for ultra light bodybuilding I dare say. However listening to some idiots saying “This machine totally change my life” and so on my opinion about pilates has established itself definitely: pilates is a humbug. It’s pure marketing, there’s nothing particular in pilates, apart of spending money on aero pilates, ring pilates or other similar stuff which you can’t do exercising yoga (total price of the session: $0), or simply using dumbbells or bicycle. There are hundreds of post telling you “buy this or that”, stupid ads nothing more. Honestly, I don’t see any reason to continue to write about pilates.

This is the end

Ok, this is the end of my first class. I’ve learned about reformer and stretches, about George Pilates and Mari Winsor. I’ve looked at some cute stretching photos, ordered a pilates DVD and now it’s time to finish work. I stand up, make two steps right and start to exercise. First a deep breath, then a second, then I can open my half full half empty bottle of gin and start to think that one day I was young, strong, full of joy. And now I’m old, strong, full of joy. Nothing changes. Never. With a pilates machine or without one has to like oneself, like the people and the companies who produce and sell the machines. They like money. I like money too. Too much. By the way – do you think this is important? Anyway, people don’t read anymore. There are already too many unnecessary words floating around the internet. Some more of them about home gym machines and discount home gyms on other posts.
